He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Communications in 1996. He received his law degree from the University of North Carolina  at Chapel Hill in 1999. He served on the University of North Carolina Law Review as a Staff Member from 1997 to 1998. He was admitted to the North Carolina Bar in 1999.

Mr. Oliver is a member of the North Carolina State Bar, the American Bankruptcy Institute, the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers, and the Craven County Bar Association.

His areas of practice are Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, Workouts, Civil Litigation, and Federal Criminal Defense.
